The aviation industry is the fastest-growing sector in transport. By 2050, the number of air passengers could rise from the current 9.7 billion to as many as 12.4 billion, whilst kerosene consumption could increase by a factor of 2.4 to 3.8. This results in emissions of just under one billion tonnes of CO2 per year. Given the forecasts for 2050, airtravel will continue to have a significant environmental impact and further accelerate global warming.

The aviation sector therefore needs alternatives for zero-emission transport – SAFs for example reduce CO₂ emissions, but do not solve the problem. Airships, developed and built by Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) and FLYING WHALES, have the potential to significantly reduce the environmental impact of passenger and freight transport.

How great is the potential of this mode of transport, and what is feasible in the short and medium term?
